Introduction to Research Design and Statistics
Assignment #3
For each of the questions below, be sure to perform the necessary descriptive statistics
and exploratory data analyses prior doing hypothesis testing. You only need to display these
results or comment on them if they are relevant. The lahigh data are to be used
for all of the questions.
1. Determine if there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores for
Schools Alpha and Beta on the CTBS Language test (langnce).
a. State the null hypothesis in words and symbols.
b. State the alternative hypothesis in words and symbols.
c. Give the assumptions underlying this t-test and how you will verify them.
d. Report the appropriate observed value of t along with the degrees of freedom.
e. State the critical value of t at alpha = 0.05.
f. State your conclusion.
g. Interpret the results.
2. Assuming the CTBS Language Test (langnce) and CTBS Math test (mathnce) have
common scales, conduct an analysis to determine if there is a significant difference between
the two test scores at School Beta.
Are the data correlated? Which statistical test should you use?
a. State the null hypothesis in words and symbols.
b. State the alternative hy potheses in words and symbols.
c. Give the assumptions underlying this t-test and how you will verify them.
d. Report the appropriate observed value of t along with the degrees of freedom.
e. State the critical value of t at alpha = 0.05.
f. State your conclusion.
g. Interpret the results.
3. A district administrator strongly believes that male high school students are absent from
school more frequently than female high school students.
a. State the null hypothesis in words and symbols.
b. State the alternative hypotheses in words and symbols.
c. Give the assumptions underlying this t-test and how you will verify them.
d. Report the appropriate observed value of t along with the degrees of freedom.
e. State the critical value of t at alpha = 0.05.
f. State your conclusion.
g. Interpret the results.
For the next two questions, run the appropriate analyses and state your conclusions.
4. Is there a significant difference between males and females on ...
a. the CTBS Language Test?
b. the CTBS Math Test?
5. Is there a significant difference between CTBS Language and Math ...
a. for females?
b. for males?
